MEANINGFUL CONVERSATIONS

In my work with clients I’m noticing an increased focus in intentionality.

In this time in our economic cycle there is a focus on costs, on increased quality and better products and service. I believe this starts with our leaders having better conversations.

A senior leader I worked alongside recently caught my attention when he shared that he was struggling to understand this Generation Z coming into the workplace. His 28 years in leadership experience had got him through till now but he was perplexed at how to connect with the latest batch of bright-eyed employees. It caught my attention as this leader is an extremely effective and respected one and if he was find this an issue, he can’t be alone.

I find that even though 1-on-1 conversations aren’t revolutionary or even new, they are super effective. The 25-45 mins taken on a fortnightly or monthly basis for a 1-on-1 is time well spent.

It starts with pure curiosity: How are they doing? What makes them tick?

Being interested and just listening to your direct report shows them that they are valued.

Before you even ask them about their business tasks, see what happens when you connect and build warmth 1-on-1.
