MARK’S 34 DAY LOCKDOWN EXPERIENCE IN 2020
One week into New Zealand’s Covid-19 lockdown, it became apparent to me that my regular training work would not be at normal levels for some time. But an opportunity presented itself. Sanford Ltd, a key client of mine in the fishing industry, mentioned they were short of crew for their deepwater fleet. A crazy idea popped in my head. What if I went as crew on the vessel to see what it is really like to work on at sea? Five days later and nearing midnight on the 8 April as I walked up the gang plank of the fishing vessel, I vividly remember thinking “should I just turn around and walk away right now?” I decided to feel the fear and do it anyway. What followed was an adventure unlike any I’ve had and one I may not ever have again. Follow my blog to hear about my experience and what I learnt about practical leadership along the way. I’ll outline my personal learnings, my struggles and successes, as well as key leadership learnings from my five week Southern Ocean adventure.
As we all adjust to this new normal, with many of us now working with uncertainty around new routines and workspaces, it is more important than ever to demonstrate a commitment to your people and to continue to provide your leaders and managers with the practical skills and tools they need. Teams need to feel valued and connected and this should come from their direct managers, despite any distance barriers.
I am back delivering face-to-face training and I’m set up to deliver engaging virtual workshops as well.
